Barbara Marks Gallery: Where Design Comes to Life

Harrington College of Design students have an opportunity to develop problem-solving, critical thinking, conceptualization, and spatial visualization skills to create the foundation for hands-on design in the studio. Take a look.

About the Marks Gallery
Harrington College of Design has dedicated its main student gallery on the second floor to Barbara Marks, former administrator and instructor. Barbara Marks retired from Harrington after 32 years of service. She began her Harrington career in 1972 as director of education. Over the years, she held several different positions from placement director to resource lab manager. Most recently, she was gallery director, responsible for selecting and displaying outstanding student work.

Barbara Marks’ many achievements at Harrington included initiating and teaching the sources and materials course, prompting former Harrington President Robert Marks (no relation) to build a resource library and introducing top industry professionals to Harrington by arranging lectures and seminars. She is best known for her work with students at the design college, teaching them to apply color in the interior. As a result of her impact, in 2001 Harrington dedicated its student gallery to Marks in a special ceremony.

The process of Interior Design employs creativity and graphic communication skills. Harrington College of Design's Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design Program is designed to develop these skills through problem-solving in two-dimensional and three-dimensional media. The student is challenged to develop critical thinking, conceptualization, and spatial visualization abilities. These skills can form the foundation for both hands-on and digital design and communication tools, which are integrated with an understanding of the interior environment in the design studio.......................................
