Internships are a great way to get a head start while you are still in college. Most Interior Design programs include an internship with their curriculum, which can give you an advantage, working with a design firm. Interior Design programs usually include internships in the final year of classes. Design firms are looking for students with high energy, great communication skills, and who can pay close attention to details. There typically two different areas interns can work in: commercial and residential. Commercial clients can include club houses, lobbies, offices and businesses. Residential clients can include homes, apartments, duplexes and town homes.

In addition to an internship, students earning an education in Interior Design should develop a portfolio. The portfolio can emphasize a student’s abilities. Each portfolio should be unique to the specific talents of the student creating it. There are several different methods of delivery for a portfolio, including creating a CD, making a PowerPoint presentation or creating an online portfolio.
