Communication Design student, Elise Weiler, wins honorable mention in Ravinia Poster Contest.


Communication design student, Jonathan Girton, wins national Clorox redesign clean competition.


Chicago-area interior designer and Harrington grad, Rebekah Zaveloff, has a feature article in the March 2010 Better Homes and Gardens magazine. Her article features indoor color and a new product line she has developed called Design in Bag. In this bag are product material samples for cabinets, tile, counters and paint picks plus 3-D renderings and buying tips. She has developed more than 30 bags, each with a different concept, that sell for $99.00 each at designinabag.com.


The International Interior Design Association Illinois Chapter recently announced that the winner of their new logo was designed by IIDA Illinois member and Harrington College of Design graduate Mindy Zimmer. In fact, the two other finalists, Elaine Decho-Fishman and Samantha Ng, were also Harrington graduates. Click here for more information.


On Thursday, May 14th, Aimee Nemeckay was awarded the 2009 Spirit Award. The Spirit Award recognizes an outstanding volunteer of Design for Dignity. Aimee Nemeckay is a 2003 graduate of Harrington College of Design and works for Susan Fredman Design Group.


Two Interior Design students, Samantha Barlog and Tomas Alvarez, won the Red Bull competition at the Aragon Ballroom on Thursday, May 14th. Presenting to over thirty people, their design was chosen for the following reasons:

  • Very creative, brought elements of the Red Bull brand out in the design (music and colors)
  • Good overall incorporation of Red Bull
  • Liked the flow of energy. The design made you feel fresh, alive.
  • Furniture is comfortable / functional, easy to maintain and would last.


Two Harrington students, Venessa Jimenez and Veronica Rodriguez, have been awarded scholarships by the HACIA Scholarship Foundation (HSF) at the 10th annual awards luncheon on Tuesday, May 12th. This is significant because it is the first time HACIA (Hispanic American Construction Industry Association), which has given hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships to architecture and engineering students, has awarded scholarships to interior design students. HSF board members include representatives of organizations such as URBANWorks, Kenny Construction, DeStefano and Partners, Fifth Third Bank, d’Escoto, Metra, GSG Consultants and Guajardo Architects.

Two of five college/university awards went to Harrington students (who were competing against students from schools like Bradley, IIT, Marquette, Purdue, UIUC and UIC).

In addition, Veronica Rodriguez won the prestigious Joe Claussen Award, given to the scholarship applicant with the strongest community service record.


Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) has designated Harrington College of Design as an Honor Roll Institution. ACICS commented, “During the recent evaluation for a new grant of accreditation, your institution demonstrated exemplary standards and a clear understanding of ACICS Accreditation Criteria.” The college will be honored at the Annual Meeting in Orlando, FL in June.


March 2009
Denis Nervig and Bill Gratton of the MAC Group were on campus to share some of the latest equipment that the Mamiya America Corporation has to offer. The MAC group is the exclusive importer for Leaf digital backs, Mamiya Cameras, Seconic light meters, Profoto lighting equipment among other lines.

The event was attended by about 50 students, faculty, several Digital Photography graduates and prospective students.



On the evening of March 19th, Harrington College of Design hosted former ASMP President, Susan Carr, in a capacity crowd. The audience, made up of Harrington students and local and regional photographers, learned how to price and negotiate in this sluggish economy. Harrington’s Digital Photography program was proud to host this industry event.





On March 11th, 2009 Harrington College of Design hosted the opening of the third annual Digital Photography Show in the Madison Street Gallery. The student work selected for the exhibit was agreed upon unanimously by the full-time faculty. This year, 32 pieces were displayed from students in all semesters of the 5 semester Associate of Applied Science in Digital Photography Program.

The show will be on display through the end of March 2009.

The process of Interior Design employs creativity and graphic communication skills. Harrington College of Design's Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design Program is designed to develop these skills through problem-solving in two-dimensional and three-dimensional media. The student is challenged to develop critical thinking, conceptualization, and spatial visualization abilities. These skills can form the foundation for both hands-on and digital design and communication tools, which are integrated with an understanding of the interior environment in the design studio.......................................
