The Harrington Institute of Interior Design has added a 24-credit professional certificate program in kitchens and baths, along with four new undergraduate courses to its fall semester.
Harrington, which offers a bachelor’s degree in fine arts, an associates degree and a diploma in interior design, will now offer a six course curriculum with an internship for a kitchen and bath program to interior design professionals, industry showroom personnel and fourth-year students, which may be taken over several semesters.
The four new undergraduate courses include Creative Movement, Community Service and Social Issues, Space-planning for Commercial Interiors and American Housing.
The six courses in the certificate program include: Programming for Kitchens and Baths, an analysis of the client needs and use of the latest technologies in the kitchen and bath industry; Lighting, Electrical, and Plumbing, an in-depth look at the inner workings of the kitchen and bath, as well as specifications for a variety of installations; and Business Practices in Kitchens and Baths, which covers contract documents and the supervision and implementation of projects using ethical and professional standards.
The undergraduate courses, Creative Movement, Community Service, Space-planning and American Housing are designed to expand the students understanding of how interior design impacts different aspects of life.
Creative Movement will explore how the human figure moves through interior space. Paul Abrahamson, a locally known artistic director, chorographer and dancer with the Lyric Opera and Joffery Ballet, will teach the course.
Community Service and Social Issues is being taught in conjunction with the Supporting Spirit Foundation, a non-for-profit organization that provides interior design services to charitable organizations and community resources. The course, which will allow the students to participate in a community-based project, is taught by Susan Fredman, founder of the Supporting Spirit Foundation and an interior designer.
Space-planning for Commercial Interiors, specializes in systems furniture specification, while American Housing will review the evolution of the various housing styles of America and what their architectural elements are based on.
