HARRINGTON ADDS DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY PROGRAM

For Immediate Release

(Chicago, IL – Feb. 13, 2004) The Harrington College of Design has added an associate’s degree in digital photography to its spring 2004 semester. It is Chicago’s only degree program in this field as well as the first time the college has offered a degree outside interior design.

Working with the Brooks Institute of Photography, one of the world’s leading professional photographic schools, Harrington developed a program to teach the latest techniques in commercial digital photography with an emphasis on design and architecture.

Dirk Fletcher, an award winning freelance photographer and staff photographer for the Museum of Science and Industry will be the program’s director. The curriculum consists of 21 different courses and can be completed in five concentrated semesters. Courses include:

  • Fundamentals of Digital Photography: Basic digital photography techniques are introduced to familiarize students with digital cameras, exposures and basic image processing.
  • Digital Imaging: A hands-on introduction to digital image media. Students will learn to use hardware and software to enhance, correct and manipulate images.
  • Location Lighting: Teaches the understanding and control of lighting and the practical application of various qualities of light in any environment.
  • Studio Lighting: Explains the six qualities of light control in a studio table-top environment.
  • Lighting People: Teaches complimentary portrait lighting, posing and dealing with people, both in studio and location settings.
  • Commercial Photography: Students will gain practical experience in fashion, still life and use of people in conceptual corporate/advertising photography.
  • Digital Illustration: Concentrates on the use of the computer as an illustration and page layout tool.
  • Physics of Light: Teaches the use of various styles of light, their spectral aspects and the effect of various materials on light.
  • Architecture and Interior Photography: Highlights creativity, enhancement of conceptual understanding and problem solving in a built environment.
  • Electronic Prepress: Introduces students to the offset printing profession, its design consideration, tools and techniques.

"Two years ago photography was part of the curriculum at Harrington, but was phased out to meet changes within the design industry," says Patrick Comstock, president of the Harrington College of Design. "We have always felt that photography was an important adjunct to interior design. We now can offer it as a separate degree, giving it the attention it deserves."

Located at 200 W. Madison St., Harrington is a four-year college that offers flexible scheduling for a bachelor of fine arts degree in interior design, an associate of applied science degree, a professional diploma and a kitchen and bath certificate program.

Founded in Chicago in 1931, the school seeks to foster an environment that maximizes students’ intellectual and artistic potential. The majority of the faculty are practicing interior designers, architects and fine art professionals. Harrington is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, and the BFA program is accredited by the Foundation for Interior Designer Education Research (FIDER). Harrington is also recognized by the Illinois Board of Higher Education.

The process of Interior Design employs creativity and graphic communication skills. Harrington College of Design's Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design Program is designed to develop these skills through problem-solving in two-dimensional and three-dimensional media. The student is challenged to develop critical thinking, conceptualization, and spatial visualization abilities. These skills can form the foundation for both hands-on and digital design and communication tools, which are integrated with an understanding of the interior environment in the design studio.......................................
