(CHICAGO – October 1, 2007) – Tim Arroyo, photography professor at Harrington College of Design, has been selected to be part of "The Art of Digital," an international exhibition of digital art. The showcase will run from October 6 to November 11 at San Diego’s Lyceum Theatre Gallery.
Arroyo, of Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood, titled his photo "Phoenix," which is a composite image from two separate photographs of smoke. The two shots were taken with a Mamiya 645 and a Leaf Aptus 17 megapixel digital back. Arroyo used Adobe Photoshop to add color and create the final composition.
"When shooting smoke, there is a moment when the smoke shows me how it wants to be photographed," said Arroyo. "In this instance, the smoke wanted to be shot as a bird, the mythological Fiery Phoenix. I simply needed to be able to see these smoke forms."
"Phoenix" is one of 83 digital prints to be featured. Some 104 pieces were selected overall in the categories of print; video and 3D sculpture from almost 3,000 entries from 40 countries. Neal Benezra, director of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, juried the show.
