HARRINGTON COLLEGE OF DESIGN FACULTY MEMBER JEFFERY E. CLARK PUBLISHES NEW FACILITY PLANNING BOOK

For Immediate Release

CHICAGO, IL (March 19, 2007) – Harrington College of Design is pleased to announce that the book, Facility Planning: Principles, Technology, Guidelines by Harrington faculty member, Jeffrey E. Clark, was recently released by Prentice Hall.

Written to emphasize the relationships of classical planning principles to the layout of space, this comprehensive book illustrates ways in which these principles apply to design programs of the past and present.  The primary focus of the book is on planning office space, but it also includes a chapter on space programming and planning in a residential context. CAD and CAFM applications are emphasized throughout and two advanced chapters discuss relational databases and their use in computer-aided facility management.  Facility Planning is for beginning and intermediate level individuals interested in design and in developing their space planning skills.

“I was approached by Prentice Hall in early 2003 about doing a book on space planning,” said Clark.  “Most of my experience is in commercial interiors, and I spent about twenty years as a programming specialist.  Prior to joining   Harrington, I was with a systems integration firm specializing in facility management.  I proposed Facility Planning as a broad overview of planning and design principles, building codes and other guidelines, with a strong emphasis on the technical issues related to facility programming, planning, and management.”

Clark has been a full-time faculty member of Harrington College of Design since 2002.  He began his career with an architectural degree from Illinois Institute of Technology, and has worked with computers for over thirty-five years.  Clark focused his efforts in the area of commercial interior design and facility planning as a principal of such firms as ISD Incorporated, Murphy/Jahn; GHK Associates; and Fujkawa Johnson, one of two successor firms to the Office of Mies van der Rohe.  As a software developer, his work has been featured in such publications as PC Magazine, Cadalyst, and Facilities Design & Management.   Clark’s first book titled VBA for AutoCAD 2002, Writing AutoCAD Macros was published by Prentice Hall in 2002.

The process of Interior Design employs creativity and graphic communication skills. Harrington College of Design's Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design Program is designed to develop these skills through problem-solving in two-dimensional and three-dimensional media. The student is challenged to develop critical thinking, conceptualization, and spatial visualization abilities. These skills can form the foundation for both hands-on and digital design and communication tools, which are integrated with an understanding of the interior environment in the design studio.......................................
