(CHICAGO – January 11, 2007) – Harrington College of Design announced today that it was recently named to the first President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The honor roll is an initiative of Learn and Serve America, a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service.
Since 1990, Learn and Serve America has allocated thousands of dollars in grant money to help incorporate community service into the classroom through service learning. The organization brings together schools, faith-based and other community organizations, and institutions of higher education to provide for both immediate and long-term needs in the community. The group recently established the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll to promote President Bush's commitment to the civic engagement programs of the nation's colleges and universities. The award program recognizes the assistance that college students provide to their local communities through volunteer service.
"Building community service into our curriculum, core values and business practices have instilled a deeper understanding and appreciation of collaboration and community among students, faculty and staff," said Erik Parks, President of Harrington College of Design. "We are honored by this recognition."
The President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll is co-sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service, the Department of Education, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, USA Freedom Corps, and the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation. The recognition is presented in cooperation with Campus Compact, a national coalition of nearly 1,000 college and university presidents. Additional information on the award program can be found at www.learnandserve.gov/about/programs/.
