HARRINGTON FACULTY HONORED AT INTERNATIONAL PHOTO CONTEST

CHICAGO (Jan.24, 2008) – Harrington College of Design digital photography department chair Dirk Fletcher and instructor Susannah Holmes took top honors in the Photo Imaging Education Association (PIEA) 2008 international student-teacher photo competition and exhibit. (Photos available upon request.)

Fletcher, 39, of Chicago, received the grand prize in the faculty-portfolio category for his portfolio of ten images. The photographs were taken at the port city of Rizaho China for the Chinese government over a six day excursion. The images were made with Canon 5D digital bodies and the 24-105L, 70-200 f/2.8L IS or the amazing 50mm f/1.2L. All photos were metered with a Sekonic L-358, an aging Minolta Auto Meter IV F, or the in-camera meter. The entire job was shot raw and processed entirely through Adobe Lightroom v1.2.

Holmes, 33, also of Chicago, took third place in the same category for her portfolio of eight images. PIEA chose 2 images for the traveling exhibit. The images are of her daughter, shot over a period of time. They were all captured using natural light and some shots utilized simple light modification tools, fill card and/or diffusion screen. These images were shot with a Canon 5D and an EF 85mm f/1.2 lens. Holmes also used a Minolta IV F to meter. She made minor edits in both Photoshop and Lightroom, specifically converting them to black and white images.

Harrington College of Design was among 115 schools in nine countries competing. The contest received 6,150 entries. Winners will share more than $158,000 in prizes, such as film, digital cameras, printers, tripods and scholarships. The images will be on display at the Photo Marketing Convention in Las Vegas Jan. 31 to Feb. 2and then tour venues in Australia, Canada, South Africa and the United States.

The contest was judged by Rich Clarkson, former director of photography for the National Geographic Society, Denver; Barbara Bridgers-Johnson, general manager for imaging and photography at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and Roy Flukinger, former senior curator of photography and film of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin.
