What is Communication Design?

You’ve heard of degree programs in graphic design and advertising design – but have you heard about communication design yet? While communication design is similar to many other design degree programs, its one major difference gives students the ability to become leaders in the design industry.

Communication design is simply a combination of graphic and advertising design that teaches both the “how” and “why” of design. While most graphic design programs teach students how to design well, they don’t really help students think creatively or solve design problems. A good Communication Design program is an education for both sides of the brain.

Technical Skill
A quality communication design program, like a good graphic design or advertising program, will teach students how to design pieces like brochures, packages, logos and advertisements. Students should get a good foundation in drawing, and then build on that to learn how to design on a computer. They should be able to answer questions like “What makes a good logo?” “Which items should be included on a home page?” and “What is the difference between designing for a flat surface and designing for packaging?”

Strategic Planning
Where communication design curriculums differ from traditional design programs is that they teach students how to strategically solve visual problems. Students learn how to come up with creative ideas for designs that truly speak to the intended audience. They learn how to solve problems from many different angles by drawing, writing, speaking and designing intelligently. The ability to strategically plan gives graduates the chance to truly become leaders – not just technicians.

The overall goal of design should be to communicate a message. If a designer can only come up with great ideas, yet lacks the skill to turn those ideas into a solid design, his ideas are worthless. On the other hand, a person who knows how to create beautiful design, but lacks the creativity to come up with his own design will never be able to communicate with an audience. Effective communication through design can only come through solid planning and execution.
